California Must Eats

California natives will tell you that there’s no place better than California and people from all other states will tell you that there’s no better place to visit than California. Because not only does California have golden beaches and endless sunshine, it also has some of the best food out there.

Avocado Toast

AVOCADO TOAST Californians are fiercely proud of their incredible avocados; they've turned the creamy green fruit into an everlasting fad. Aside from the ubiquitous guacamole throughout the state, avocado shows up in everything from burgers to ice cream, but one of the most-popular ways to enjoy avocados is mashed high on top of toast.

IN-N-OUT DOUBLE-DOUBLE CHEESEBURGER In 1948, Harry Snyder opened the state’s first drive-thru burger stand. The Double-Double didn’t come around until the ‘60s  but it has become such an institution that it now rocks its own registered trademark. Don’t forget an order of fries and a milkshake.

PINK’S HOT DOGS Normal hot dogs are boring. Pink’s hot dogs are epic. They’re named after infamous celebrities and are topped with anything from bacon to sour cream to nacho cheese.

KOGI BBQ Not only did Kogi BBQ basically begin the food truck craze, but they also began the Asian fusion craze with their Korean-Mexican dishes.

CALIFORNIA SUSHI ROLL It's no coincidence that one of the most popular sushi rolls in the country is named after the Golden State. You can find a California Roll on every sushi menu in the country, but they are most flavorful here in SoCal thanks to all of our fresh avocados.

CIOPPINO The waterfront city of San Francisco is a fount of classic seafood dishes, and cioppino is one of its most iconic. The fish stew is usually made with a collection of Pacific-caught fare, including any mix and match of squid, Dungeness crab, mussels, clams and white fish, with a tomato and wine sauce base.

ACAI BOWLS may have originated in Brazil and first became popular in Hawaii, but they’re still a SoCal favorite. Topped with fruit and superfoods, you’ll feel healthy and fit.

POKE BOWLS Poke is another Hawaiian favorite that Californians have adopted.
Fish Tacos

FISH TACOS Californians are all about the fish taco. With easy access to the Pacific’s bounty with the culinary influence of nearby Baja. Some Californians believe it’s possible to eat fish tacos for every meal.

OYSTERS West Coast oysters are a little different from their East Coast counterparts. On the Pacific side, oysters tend to be a little sweeter and creamier, and there are countless places to get freshly shucked samples.

KOREAN BBQ California boasts the largest population of Koreans in America, making it one of the best places outside Korea for Korean food. A traditional Korean barbecue feast — featuring colorful side dishes called "banchan" — will help start the meal with the most bang for your buck.

SUSHIRRITO California is the land of the burritos and the birthplace of the infamous sushirrito, aka everything that’s good about sushi wrapped up in a burrito body.

DISNEYLAND CHURROS The happiest place on earth, and their churros will make you the happiest person on earth.

FRIED CHICKEN SANDWICH The sandwich is worth the wait! Enjoy it best outdoors at a sidewalk table. The perfectly breaded chicken is both plump and juicy, with coleslaw balancing the fried flavor. Crisp cabbage, jalapeno, red onion, and parsley add spice and crunch.

COBB SALAD The cobb salad is a delicious compromise for people who don’t feel like eating a salad but still want to get in their leafy greens. Traditionally made up of lettuce, bacon, tomato, hard-boiled egg, avocado, cheese and red wine vinaigrette, the cobb may not be the healthiest salad, but it’s one of the heartiest; the cobb's Los Angeles roots make it a California must-try.

CLAM CHOWDER When the coastline is blanketed in the thick marine layer and the chilly seaside breeze rolls in, there may be no better respite than a bowl of clam chowder. Throw the chunky, hearty soup into a sourdough bread bowl, and you’ve got another California classic.

FRENCH DIP Don’t get thrown off by the name. The French Dip sandwich is an American classic that originated in sunny Los Angeles. The sandwich is simple with thinly sliced roast beef and piled generously inside a French roll that has been dipped in beef jus from the meat-roasting process. When it comes to a melt-in-your-mouth French Dip sandwich, there's nothing more famous than the original French Dip at Phillipe the Original in Los Angeles. This iconic eatery has been a part of the SoCal restaurant scene since 1908. After you take your first bite of one of their sandwiches you'll see why this place is so famous.

CARNE ASADA BURRITOS & CARNITAS BURRITOS You can’t eat around California and not get your hands on a burrito! Most are mammoth in size and come complete with chunky pico de gallo, fresh guacamole and refried beans.

MEXICAN FOOD Anyone who has ever lived in SoCal then moved away will tell you the one type of food they miss the most is Mexican food. It's true that you can order Mexican food anywhere in the country, but it's never as flavorful and authentic as what you can find here.

ROSCOE’S CHICKEN & WAFFLES The South gets a lot of love for its fried chicken, but few places in the world rival Los Angeles for chicken and waffles. Founded by a New Yorker in South Los Angeles in 1975, it has become one of California’s most-beloved fried chicken destinations.

APPLE PIE One of the most famous pie places in California, the Julian Pie Company grows their own apples and retains the original traditions from when they first started, making it a cozy, homey place to grab a slice of pie. Though based out of Julian, you can now find their pies in San Diego and Riverside as well.

CRAFT BREW Though California is known for its Napa Valley wines, beer lovers should know that the locally brewed craft beers are something worth trying as well. Visit Anaheim Craft Breweries
